Fields of Gold

Apologies for the lack of posts...this post has been a long time coming! Back in January 2012 I made a plan to try 12 restaurants around Melbourne...1 per month.

First off the list was Golden Fields...an exciting restaurant and bar on Fitzroy St, St. Kilda. This restaurant is the new baby in the Cumulus and Cutler & Co family, expertly steered by the Number One Hottest Chef in Australia (The Weekend Australian Hottest 50 Awards 2012)...Andrew McConnell.

The menu encompasses a broad selection of Asian dishes and encourages family style sharing with both small and large plates on offer. The restaurant has clean, Asian lines with the focal point being the full length marble bar that doubles as an open kitchen. Chicken feet line the front wall and create an abstract piece of art.

How about the food? Amazing...with hindsight this is easily one of my favourite meals for 2012. To start we cleansed the palate with four Clare De Lune oysters...ocean fresh and deliciously creamy.Β Β  Next up was a dish of rolled Berkshire pork belly followed by one of the most exciting dishes of the evening. The New England Lobster Roll. This dish put Golden Fields on the map and is so popular they even offer these as takeaway! In the first year along they sold 35,000 of these babies. Hype aside...are they worth the $15 price tag? Absolutely...the warm buttery brioche adds a sweetness to the cold poached crayfish which is perfectly matched with fresh watercress and the king of all mayonnaise "kewpie". I didn't want the taste sensation to end, but couldn't resist gobbling down bite after bite.

For main we couldn't go past the slow roast lamb shoulder flavoured with lemon and cumin seeds. The lamb literally fell straight off the bone and melted in my mouth. Lemon and cumin were the perfect match for this dish... adding just the right amount of complexity to the lamb. For sides we chose zucchini with chilli and oyster sauce. Also delicious!

With straining stomachs we found the strength to peruse the dessert menu. Having a big sweet tooth I never pass up an opportunity for dessert...especially not when the offering is as delicious as peanut butter parfait with salted caramel and chocolate! A match made in heaven and an amazing finish to an outstanding meal!

The drinks menu offers a good selection of wines by the glass, the decanter and bottle. Sake is also on offer and for those with an unlimited budget a good selection of Magnums. Pricing sits firmly in the mid to high-end range.

I highly recommend adding Golden Fields to your dining list...outstanding service and even more amazing food!

Bookings are only taken for groups of 8-12 and all groups are offered a choice of two set menus. If there is a wait... the marble bar is a great place to perch and watch the busy kitchen in action.
